New York-born DJ and Lot Radio resident Gabrielle Kwarteng is on a steady, slow-burning rise upward. Her guest shows broadcasted from the Brooklyn radio station won her the Mixcloud Online Radio Award for Best Eclectic Show in 2017. Two years later, she was given a regular slot, which garnered her a loyal following and led to bookings at New York’s Nowadays, Elsewhere and Black Flamingo. She quickly became a fixture in the local scene for seamlessly weaving in a diverse range of sounds.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx to Ghanaian parents, Gabrielle grew up listening to ‘60s Ghanaian highlife, ‘70s Nigerian Afrobeat and American disco, funk and jazz on cassette at home. Around the age of nine, she accidentally discovered the record feature on her boombox stereo, and began to create her own mixtapes on blank cassette tapes. The cassettes were eventually replaced with CDs, before she ventured into the world of vinyl, where she hasn’t looked back since.
2019 resulted in Gabrielle’s relocation to Berlin where she began to play more regularly in the UK and Europe, including Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival Sète, Lost Village Festival, Griessmuehle, Brilliant Corners, Radio Radio, and more. Her lively vibe behind the decks goes hand-in-hand with her selections that maintain an uplifting vitality despite hailing from many different places and eras. You can expect ‘80s Chicago & ‘90s NY house, broken beats, tribal percussion grooves, West African disco, jazz, acid and a whole lot more nestled in her bag, ready to be played out at the right moment.
